Anyone involved in the construction, remodeling, architecture and interior design industries can attest to the shifting tastes, styles and preferences in the marketplace. These changes are nothing new. Some take years to phase out. (Remember white wash oak cabinets?) Others disappear almost overnight. (Remember avocado-colored appliances?)

Such a change has been in the works for some time now. We see it internally in the shifting tastes and preferences of our clients, as reflected by their requests and design objective. We see it in showrooms and tradeshows and we see it in magazines all over. The Mediterranean and Tuscany styles are gradually giving way to more contemporary lines. The traditional kitchens are gradually giving way to more modern ones.

Some of the European cabinet makers have been making modern kitchen cabinets for a very long time now. Poggenpohl kitchens have been “modern” forever, it would seem. They are not the only ones, of course. For the most part Alno cabinets (and many others) emphasize clean lines, modern materials and geometric looks, all integral to the modern kitchen look.

“Going modern” is not without its challenges. For the most part, good quality modern cabinets would be more costly than similar quality traditional ones. Switching to a modern style kitchen could potentially also mean changing some of the architectural style of the home, at least in the rooms immediately attached to or adjacent to the kitchen. Most general construction contractors today are not familiar with the particulars products, styles and practices associated with a modern style home, which could complicate any project. Likewise, many of the designers might not be familiar with what it takes to produce a competent design and specifications for such a project.

What should you do?

You can start by realistically setting a budget. Your next step is to assemble a team of competent professionals with demonstrable experience and expertise in modern kitchens and homes. For example, review your designer’s portfolio. Look for projects that are in the style that you like.

As for cabinets, you can always opt for the ultra expensive European brands. Better yet, check out Mal Corboy Cabinets – for which we are the exclusive North America distributors. They are equal or better than anything out there AND they all come with Mal Corboy personally designing your new kitchen. Now that’s a winning formula!
